Teal's writing has been published in New Scientist, Discover, and Running Times, and online at Science, Runner's World, and Outside, among others. She also contributes to Science Update, Brainfacts.org, and the Society for Neuroscience's NeurOnline. She was awarded a AAAS Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellowship in 2013.

At the University of Richmond, Teal doubled majored in psychology and mathematics, and in 2014 she received her PhD in neuroscience from Georgetown University.

Teal is also a competitive marathoner and writes about her training and racing on her personal blog, milestothetrials.com
